About Dr. Josephine Lee
Korean-born soprano Dr. Josephine YoonGeong Lee, praised by The New York Times for singing “with suave clarity,” is a versatile soloist, recitalist, and educator. A winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions San Francisco District, as a full-time regular chorus at San Francisco Opera, she has been frequently invited to perform throughout the Bay Area as a soprano soloist.
Dr. Lee has performed with prominent ensembles in the United States and South Korea, including the San Francisco Symphony, Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra, Stanford Symphony Orchestra, Korea National Opera Orchestra, Korea Coop Orchestra, and Gangneung Philharmonic Orchestra. Her performances have taken place at major venues such as Davies Symphony Hall, Herbst Theatre, Bing Concert Hall, UC Berkeley’s Hertz Hall, and Seoul Arts Center Opera House.
In the 2026–2027 season, Dr. Lee covered the role of Cio-Cio-San, sung in Japanese, with Pocket Opera and was featured as a soprano soloist in Schubert’s Mass in A-flat with the Stanford Symphony Chorus. She is also looking forward to performing world premiere Korean art songs accompanied by gayageum as Duo Soriga this June at Old First Concerts in San Francisco. This July, Dr. Lee will present “Korean Art Songs about Korean Cuisine” at the NATS National Conference, held in San Antonio, TX.
She was a Soprano Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center for two consecutive years, where she received the Grace B. Jackson Prize in 2012. She was also a Professional Stern Fellow at SongFest in 2015 and was invited to the Montecito International Music Festival as a guest artist. Her awards include two-time winner of the Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra Vocal Competition, third prize in the National Opera Association Vocal Competition Artist Division, and the Italo Tajo Memorial Award at the CCM Opera Scholarship Competition.
A passionate recitalist, Dr. Lee curates and coordinates her own recital programs. Driven by her love of collaboration, she has founded ensembles such as Duo Soriga, Duo Haru, and Ensemble Lyrique, and is also a member of Ensemble Les Six.
Dr. Lee graduated summa cum laude from Seoul Arts High School and Seoul National University. She holds Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Voice from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
